Sorry....Our School district is no longer funding World Book Online, but if you belong to the Vancouver Island Regional Library, you can access World Book online there. However, here are four great search engines to use to help locate credible, valuable information for students.
Kids’s Click was the most popular search engine for Primary and Intermediate students in one of my Information Technology courses. All websites are evaluated by teacher-libarians at Texas university and reading levels are provided. Sweet Search is another American search engine which is assessed and evaluated by experts. Both search engines offer a reliable, safe, informative basis to start exploring or researching about a topic.
Dogpile is a combination of search engines from Google, Yahoo, MSN, and Ask.com. This would be a good choice for Intermediate students after the first two options are explored.
Wikipedia has become very popular and contains information about nearly any topic. It is owned by Google and is a wiki, so it can be edited easily and point of view presented can be biased. I suggest that students who use Wikipedia also locate at least two additional sources to verify and gather information.
