Eagle View Elementary School

History

Eagle View Elementary School is a”Hidden Jewel”.  This community of about 300 students, plus parents, staff and other volunteers help to make it a vibrant and exciting place to be.  It can be reached from four different locations on foot and only one way by car. The vision for this school is “Learning for Life”, something that applies to everyone who is part of a school.

We have an active Parent Advisory Council who support extra activities for the students and families. They also contribute financially for ways to help the staff and school to have more resources than we could have otherwise.

Community is crucial to a school and other groups use the school as a place to meet, learn and share. There are adults and student sports groups who use the gym for sports practice and students use the fields for play, for soccer tournaments and track and field.

Since our amalgamation with Robert Scott School, we have created a new "Code of Conduct" for the New Eagle View Elementary School which helps remind everyone in the school that we have to remember three main things in order to be successful in learning and having relationships.

They are as follows:

We are: Accountable, Safe and Kind!

There are many events and special things that happen here, but you will find out more about that when you click on the website and the many links that our Teacher- Librarian, Sandra Gunson, has created for us.  We are proud of the Eagle View website and we hope that you will enjoy reading and accessing the information provided here in the newsletters, calendar, and blogs and so on.

This school is a vibrant and active place to be.   Please enjoy your virtual school on this site and then come to visit our school.

Our History

Did you know that EagleView Elementary School (E.V.E.S.) was originally a Junior High School?
The school opened in 1971 named Port Hardy Junior Secondary School (P.H.J.S.S.).

A few staff members attended this school during grades 8—10 and recall running hurdles down the intermediate hall and landing high jump into the E.S.L. room (which is now the library). There was no gymnasium in those days!

As Port Hardy’s population expanded, 10 portables were moved to the beach area across from Kinsman Park in 1975. Mr. W. Manke was the principal of Port Hardy Elementary School.

In 1976 the new Port Hardy Secondary School opened and the previous P.H.J.S.S. became the second main Elementary school in the Port Hardy area. A contest was held to determine a name for this elementary school. As 20 bald eagles were counted circling overhead and sitting in nearby trees one day, the name Eagle View Elementary was suggested and selected. The Chairman of the School Board at this time was named Eve Smith. It did not take long to convince her that E.V.E.S. (Eagle View Elementary School) was the perfect name for the new school. So in 1976 our school received its official name.

Initially, there were 160 students registered but by 1980 E.V.E.S. grew to 320 students.

In 1992 there was a major renovation and 70% of the school was remodeled or expanded. Four new classrooms, a multi-purpose room, a kitchen, a computer lab, and a lovely new library were added.

During 2008-09 major funding provided further upgrading to ensure E.V.E.S. was earthquake safe.

During the summer of 2010 the school received upgrading in preparation for the amalgamation of Robert Scott Elementary school with Eagle View Elementary. September 2010 the school population doubled to just over 300 students once again.
