Eagle View Elementary School Library

About Our Library

Eagle View Elementary School library is a very popular location in our school. The library is now OPEN again in the mornings from 8:30—9:00 a.m. and OPEN every day after school from 3:00—3:30 p.m.

LIBRARY CLUB: Library Club started in mid September and meets for training/exploration/leadership sessions most Wednesdays and Thursdays during lunch time. There are 40+ students in grades 4-7 involved in library club. This equates to nearly 1 out of 3 Intermediate students are in our library club! Our latest themes included: North Island history (from Ruth Botel); Spring, Easter, First Nations, Science Fair, Exploring Technology, creating ideas for a new library mat, and producing book trailers about popular books in the library. (These have just started....watch for book trailer videos attached to the library site later this school year.)

UPDATES: Olivia won a tropical fish aquarium set for our school and it is presently being stored in the library. We just had a new power pole installed and after a visual poster storage unit is removed, our new school aquarium will be set up. We are very excited about this!

Our SMART board arrived last fall and is set up against the back wall of the library. Ms. Gunson has been using it for library and ELL lessons. There is also a sign out timetable and other classes without their own SMART boards, are using this one while waiting for their own boards to arrive.

Newer popular series are the Rick Riordan books (Throne of Fire) and Veronica Roth's novel (Divergent).

I introduced a new author who has recently become a Canadian citizen (from Australia) in December. His Christmas theme books using computer graphics are extremely popular with nearly all grade levels at school. We have Canadian Jingle Bells and A Moose in a Maple Tree by Troy Townsin. Check out his website: www.amooseinamapletree.com

As our budget for the library is very limited, (about $14 per student each year) there is a fee for books which are lost or damaged. Please enjoy your books but keep them dry and in good shape for others to enjoy.

CURRENT CLASSROOM COLLABORATION PROJECTS: Mr. Starr and Mrs. Waring grades 6 and 7 (A group of 5 students are researching about the history of Port Hardy Junior Secondary school/Eagle View Elementary School. They are interviewing students, teachers, and administrators who attended this school in past years. The girls have been scanning microfiche at the Gazette, scanning photos, and interviewing some current students in upper Intermediate grades. They are utilizing ipads, ipods, and will be preparing a video about our school based on the show "What's in a name?".

Two groups from Mrs. Miller's grade 4 class are learning how to expand their thinking using the Focus on Inquiry model. They are learning to ask deep questions and research to extend their knowledge. Mrs. Sedola and Mrs. Williamson are starting to work collaboratively with Ms. Gunson on Technology stations with Kindergarten students. The students will be learning how to use interactive SMART board, Ipads/Ipods, and computers. Mr. Starr's grade 7's have just started their Focus on Inquiry Roman Empire theme projects. Well done Owain (Saskatchewan), Isabella (Ontario), Kalina (Quebec), Freddie (Manitoba) and Carson (Yukon Territory). Mr. Barfoot's class researched about Renewable Resources and learn how to properly cite sources using Easybib.com bibliography source. DIVERSITY MONTH: During October our school district has encouraged focus on the theme of Diversity. We had a guest speaker talk to the upper intermediate classes in the library about his life in Africa and years spent living in refugee camps over there. Non-Fiction and Fiction books comparing different countries, cultures, customs, family structures, differences and similarities have been introduced and discussed.

In addition to being a safe and positive place to gather, many recent research studies in the United States and Canada point to the correlation between students’ access to well stocked libraries run by qualified library staff, and increased student success in literacy achievement. Recent developments in the field of teacher-librarianship promote the importance of a teacher librarian serving a leadership position in three main areas: literacy, inquiry, and Web 2.0 technology.

Academic standards are important at our school and a strong library program supports and assists students and staff.

Drop by and visit our library one day. It is a delightful place to be!
